In this section, Wei helps you understand how Chinese painting is produced by demonstrating the step-by-step procedure involved.
Painting Animals:
To make paintings of animals, brush strokes are used to provide both the outline and the body simultaneously. Each stroke has to be placed carefully in such a way as to produce the actual animal's form. When painting animals such as a panda, cat or monkey for example, it is important to create the effect of fur. This is achieved by using a wet brush and working the body shape slowly to allow the ink to spread over the body form.
A Panda Painting: - Start with the shape of the head and body by using two strokes in grey ink. - Using black ink, add the ears. - Continue to use black ink to paint in the eyes, nose and mouth. - Using single strokes of black ink, paint in the panda's eye patches. - Finally, finish off with the arms, hands, legs and feet using black ink to create a fur texture. Add the talons by using a feathered brush.
